The NODES Research Group, part of the IIASA Advancing Systems Analysis (ASA) Program is offering an opportunity for a UI/UX designer and developer who will work under the direct supervision of the research group leader. The successful candidate will support the design and realization of state-of-the-art web applications and platforms to showcase R&D activities and implement digital products and services for large-scale research and innovation projects.

background

The NODES research group develops tools for citizen and data science combined with Earth observations to monitor, analyze, and foster sustainable development and progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To realize this vision, NODES exploits novel data ecosystems in which several actors interact via digital infrastructure, analytics, and applications to produce, analyze, exchange, and use data and information. The group aims to have impact in the field of citizen science by building trust and engagement of the wider public in science, with citizens becoming an important part of the scientific process and by increasing the overall acceptance of scientific outcomes.

The role

The successful candidate will become an integral part of the team and support the design and realization of state-of-the-art web applications and platforms to showcase R&D activities and implement digital products and services for large-scale research and innovation projects. Primary responsibilities include the UI/UX design, building and maintenance of several project-related websites and platforms as well as support in the design of mobile applications. FRAMEwork enables research and empowerment initiatives for farmers and local communities across Europe to tackle biodiversity loss. The Information Hub is an open access online platform to support FRAMEwork networks and facilitate the sharing of activities, information, data, resources and tools across farmers, scientists, policy makers, and citizens.

The Geo-Wiki (geo-wiki.org) provides anyone with the means to engage in monitoring of the earth's surface by classifying satellite, drone or ground-level imagery. Data can be input via desktop or mobile devices, with campaigns and games used to incentivize input. These innovative techniques have been used to successfully integrate citizen-derived data sources with expert and authoritative data to address pressing policy-related questions (e.g., European environmental policy, SDG indicators and more).
